Rapid Redux entered for Saturday but race fails to fill

Rapid Redux wins his 20th straight race Monday night to set a modern-day record. His connections are now eyeing another record.

Rapid Redux, who set a modern American record Monday night when he won his 20th race in a row, was entered Wednesday in a 1 1/8-mile starter-allowance race scheduled for Saturday night at Charles Town Race Course, but the race failed to attract enough entrants to be used on the card.

The horse’s connections, owner Robert Cole and trainer David Wells, hoped to quickly return Rapid Redux to action as they chase another record, Citation’s 19 victories in a calendar year. So far in 2011, Rapid Redux has won 18 races.

“We’re still eyeing Citation’s record,” said Wells. “We’re going to have to take a good look at the condition books.”

Wells and Cole both said Wednesday that with the Charles Town race out, there was no specific plan for Rapid Redux.

“There are some other options around, but we haven’t really even looked at them seriously,” Cole said.

Rapid Redux was pre-entered for the Dec. 3 Claiming Crown at Fair Grounds, and Cole said he hadn’t ruled out flying the horse to New Orleans.

“I’m going to take a close look at the past performances for that tonight,” Cole said. “It’s a long way to go to run, but it puts the horse in the spotlight, which is where he deserves to be.”

Rapid Redux, according to Wells, “came out of his race really well.” Wells said Rapid Redux walked for one hour Wednesday morning on a eurociser, a European-style hot-walking machine, and that Rapid Redux appeared “really sharp.”
