Rancour returns - at lower odds

EDMONTON, Alberta - Rancour will try to prove his upset victory in the Westerner at Northlands Park Aug. 25 was no fluke when he faces six rivals in Saturday's $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship.

With the distance of the Speed to Spare 1 3/8 miles, Rancour will be asked to travel a sixteenth of a mile farther than in the Westerner, which he won by 7 1/2 lengths under Quincy Welch at 19-1.

A 4-year-old gelding owned by Richmond Stable, Rancour made a powerful move on the final turn of the Westerner that surprised even his trainer, Ernie Keller. Previously considered a speed horse, Rancour came far off the pace in the Westerner to beat Run Joey Run going away. Rancour will pick up 11 pounds in the Speed to Spare, a weight-for-age race, carrying 126 pounds.

Run Joey Run won the Spangled Jimmy and the Journal (in a dead heat) early in this meet, but since those races finished third in the Klondike and second in both the Sun Sprint and the Westerner.

Code Name Fred, Alberta's champion older horse last year, bypassed the Westerner when he was assigned 120 pounds. He instead entered a 1 1/16-mile allowance the previous day and won a photo finish over Gray Aras. Both return in the Speed to Spare.

Real Simard will ride Code Name Fred, who was a close second both in the Klondike and in the Herald Gold Plate in Calgary. Ricky Walcott again gets the call on Gray Aras.

Scotman, Alberta's 2000 horse of the year, again will attempt to regain his championship form of last year.
