Ramseys leading breeders by earnings in 2014


Ken and Sarah Ramsey led all single-entity North American breeders by earnings for a second consecutive year in 2014, finishing with 264 wins from 1,771 starts for a combined $10,412,411.

Based in Nicholasville, Ky., the Ramseys have continued to benefit from the success of their homebred stallion, turf champion Kitten’s Joy, who has sired many of the farm’s prominent runners. Among the top Ramsey-homebreds in 2014 sired by Kitten’s Joy were Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Bobby’s Kitten, Grade 1 winners Stephanie’s Kitten and Real Solution, and Grade 1-placed Big Blue Kitten.

Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs finished second once again among non-partnership breeders, with $9,617,995 in earnings and 313 winners from 1,949 starts. With bases in Kentucky, Florida, and Ontario, Adena Springs’ breeding program was led by Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Judy the Beauty, as well as Grade 1 winners Private Zone and Game On Dude.

When factoring in breeders in partnerships, Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum’s Darley operation took over the top spot by earnings, with 219 wins from 1,304 starts for earnings of $11,549,136. The Ramseys finished second in that category, with 226 wins from 1,792 starts and earnings of $10,504,685.

Rounding out the list of top 10 individual breeders were WinStar Farm LLC with $6,897,879 in earnings; Darley, $6,713,009; Brereton C. Jones, $4,987,481; Winchell Thoroughbreds, $4,725,771; Liberation Farm & Brandywine Farm, $4,579,105; Pam and Martin Wygod, $4,504,807; Helen Alexander, $4,436,640; and Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $4,412,142.

Completing the list of top 10 breeders in partnerships were Adena Springs, $10,173,596; WinStar Farm LLC, $7,659,960; Brereton C. Jones, $5,929,699; Liberation Farm, $5,591,159; Brandywine Farm, $5,444,316; Claiborne Farm, $5,216,083, Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $5,168,129, and W.S. Farish, $4,901,072.
