Ralph Scurfield, a former chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, died on Tuesday, the racing board announced on Friday.

Scurfield was 85 and was hospitalized in Sacramento at the time of his death.

A chairman of the Association of Racing Commissioners International in 1998, Scurfield served on the California Horse Racing Board from January 1991 to September 1999. For seven of those years, he was chairman, the second-longest period that a person has held that position, the racing board said in a statement.

Scurfield spent his professional life involved in real estate. He also worked in public service with the Sacramento City Council and California State Fair and Exposition Board.

In Scurfield’s honor, a celebration of life ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club in Sacramento.
