Rallying Cry and D. Devil take Leg 1 of the McFadden Memorial Spring Claiming Series

Rallying Cry and Colonel Courtney shipped down from Hastings Park and proved tough to beat as they finished first and second in division one of Leg One of the McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series on Wednesday.  Sent off as a slight 3/2 favorite, Rallying Cry came from just off the pace under jockey Joe Crispin.  As the field came into the stretch, Colonel Courtney came up alongside Smoken Sham who turned for home with a tepid lead.  Rallying Cry was just in behind Colonel Courtney and they both began to inch away down the lane as Rallying Cry battled to a neck victory.  Both Rallying Cry and Colonel Courtney were sent out by owners North American Thoroughbred Horse Company and trainer Malcolm Beveridge.  Inhoc Signo Vinces got up for third over Smoken Sham, but Inhoc Signo Vinces was disqualified from third and placed eighth for interference at the 1/8th pole against Alybye on Fire.

Both Rallying Cry and Colonel Courtney were claimed out of the $2,500 claiming event.  Colonel Courtney went to owner/trainer Roger Stevenson in a 6 way shake, while Rallying Cry went to owner Carol Dronen and trainer Sam Dronen in a 9 way shake.

The 2nd Division went to 9 to 1 upset winner D. Devil and jockey Jose Zunino who closed from off the pace after the two race favorites, Getrdonegotrdid and Declan Downs really went at each other hard early on through an opening quarter of 21.96 seconds.  As the field straightened away, D. Devil came rolling up alongside the tired frontrunners and gradually forged past, holding off both Roaring To Go and Taking Liberties who got up for second and third respectively.

In the 2nd division, Roaring To Go who finished second was claimed in a 3 way shake by owner/trainer Debbie Van Horne.  Getrdonegotrdid who went off as the even money favorite and finished last was claimed in a 9 way shake by Jackie Smith.  And Declan Downs who finished fourth was claimed in a 5 way shake by Michael Pollowitz for trainer Guru Dharma Khalsa.

Leg Two of the McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series will be contested in two weeks on Wednesday November 16th, and will be conducted at five and one half furlongs at a $4,000 claiming level.

The McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series consists of three legs, with runners trying to accrue as many points as possible in the first two legs in order to get a spot in the $25,000 added final on Wednesday December 7th.
