Rainouts hit tracks in East

Email

The Meadowlands in New Jersey, Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts, Mountaineer Park in West Virginia, and Fort Erie in Ontario canceled their live race cards Tuesday, citing inclement weather on the Northeast seaboard exacerbated by the northern push of Hurricane Wilma.

Suffolk Downs said the Tuesday weather, which included high winds and heavy rains, created unsafe track conditions. The track also closed for simulcasting for the day.

The Meadowlands, which also cited unsafe conditions, remained open for simulcasts. The Meadowlands had already lost four full days of racing this year, and canceled racing on two other days after a total of four races were run, under record regional rainfall in October.

The Meadowlands meet, originally scheduled for 30 days, runs through Nov. 12. A pair of Tuesday cards, Nov. 1 and 8, were previously added to the schedule to make up for the lost racing days.

Mountaineer was scheduled for night racing but canceled early Tuesday morning.

Fort Erie canceled after three races, planning to resume Friday.
