Raging Rapids holds on as choice

Raging Rapids, the 7-5 favorite, went right to the front from post 8 under Jose Flores and led every step, winning the $60,000 Caught in the Rain by a three-quarters of a length over Hailie's Girl.

Hailie's Girl, under Victor Molina, sat two or three lengths off Raging Rapids most of the way, began closing the gap in midstretch, and was gaining at the wire.

Defiant Maid, bet from 7-2 on the morning line to 9-5, never fired and finished last.

Raging Rapids cut fractions of 24.24 seconds, 48.38, and 1:12.55, and finished the mile and 70 yards in 1:42.14. She paid $4.80 in a scratched-reduced field of six Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares.

Queen's Request and J. D. Safari dead-heated for third.

Trained by Ramon Preciado for Victory Thoroughbreds, Raging Rapids, a 5-year-old mare by Roanke, won for the 11th time in 20 starts since January 2006. Overall, she is 15-3-4 in 33 lifetime starts, with earnings of $297,978.
