Radiohead back with own age

Radiohead returns to juvenile competition at Newbury on Saturday following a sharp third-place finish against older horses in the Group 2 Nunthorpe Stakes. The occasion will be a contentious renewal of the Group 2, $132,000 Mill Reef Stakes.

A Brian Meehan-trained son of Johannesburg, Radiohead overcame a typically poor start as well as a bumping incident to finish ahead of seven older group race winners in the five-furlong Nunthorpe on Aug. 21. Previously he had overcome a terrific thumping at Royal Ascot to win the five-furlong, Group 2 Norfolk Stakes. Jamie Spencer will ride as Radiohead steps up to six furlongs for the first time.

Mark Johnston will send out Awzaan, who is 2 for 2 and coming off an impressive five-length score in a six-furlong Newmarket allowance on July 9. Quarrel has also won both his starts, having led throughout last time to land a six-furlong allowance on Aug. 22 at Chester.

* At Longchamp on Saturday, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Behkabad will carry the Aga Khan's colors in the Group 3, $117,000 Prix des Chenes for 2-year-old colts and geldings going a mile. Behkabad remained unbeaten after winning a 7 1/2-furlong allowance at Deauville on Aug. 5.

The most dangerous of his four rivals could be the Godolphin-owned by Emirates Dream. A York maiden winner going seven furlongs in his debut, he is by Kingmambo out of My Boston Gal, the winner of the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchil Downs at 2 and the Grade 2 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland at three. Last time Emirates Dream was fourth in the seven-furlong, Group 3 Prix La Rochette behind stablemate Buzzword and the highly regarded pair of Siyouni and Eightfold Path.
