David Grening, the New York racing reporter for Daily Racing Form , has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Walter Haight Award by the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, the organization announced on Thursday.

The Walter Haight Award is given to recognize “career excellence in turf writing,” the association said. Grening has been the New York reporter for the Form since 1998, when the publication was purchased by the Alpine Group. Before coming to the Racing Form , Grening covered racing for the New York Post and the Trentonian in New Jersey.

The organization also announced that Terry Wallace, the retired former announcer for Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., will receive the Mr. Fitz Award, which is named for former trainer “Sunny” Jim Fitzsimmons and recognizes “an individual or group for typifying the spirit of horse racing.”

In addition, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys’ Fund has been selected by the association for the Joe Palmer Award, which recognizes “service meritorious to racing.” The jockeys’ fund distributes financial assistance to 60 riders who have suffered catastrophic injuries while riding.
