Race for 3-year-old title wide open heading into Haskell, Jim Dandy

Email

If the voting for top 3-year-old colt were held today, Animal Kingdom would have the edge. But with the Kentucky Derby champion done for the year after suffering a leg injury in the Belmont Stakes, the race is wide open.

The winner of this weekend’s Haskell Invitational, with a field that includes both Shackleford and Ruler on Ice, the winners of the Preakness and Belmont, respectively, will have momentum heading into next month's Travers. Shackleford has been installed as the Morning Line favorite at 5-2, with Bob Baffert's Coil at 3-1. Pants On Fire and Ruler On Ice are both at 4-1.

History, at least, will be on the side of this week's winner: Seven of the past 10 3-year-old champions have raced in the Haskell. This could be a strong opportunity for contenders such as Astrology and Coil to start building their cases for a late run at the title. TOP 5 MOMENTS IN HASKELL INVITATIONAL HISTORY

Other 3-year-olds such as Alternation and Brilliant Speed will attempt to do the same in this weekend’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga. DAVID GRENING: JIM DANDY DRAWS FIELD OF SEVEN

DRF.com's Brad Thomas and Kenny Peck analyze the Haskell.

After the three Triple Crown events, the Haskell serves as an unofficial Round 4. The first round was won by Animal Kingdom, who stalked Shackleford’s fast pace at the Kentucky Derby and came from behind at long odds for a victory. In the Preakness, jockey Jesus Castanon rated Shackleford perfectly, holding him just off the lead, which proved effective as he edged Animal Kingdom.

Round 3 at Belmont was hailed as a two-way showdown: Shackleford vs. Animal Kingdom. As expected, Shackleford set the pace for the first mile and a quarter, but the real story was Animal Kingdom's stumble out of the gate that cost him any chance at victory. Stealing the show on the sloppy track was Ruler on Ice, the Kelly Breen horse who sat just a length off Shackleford’s pace for the majority of the race. He then took the lead down the stretch and held off Stay Thirsty and Brilliant Speed for the win.
