'Quiz' gets shot at payback

PORTLAND, Ore. - The top older fillies and mares on the grounds will face off in a one-mile invitational handicap at Portland Meadows on Saturday.

Quiz the Maid will carry high weight of 121 pounds off her record of 7 wins from 11 starts at Portland Meadows, including a win in the six-furlong Diane Kem Handicap and two victories over invitational handicap company in her first three starts at this meeting.

Quiz the Maid was upset in her last two outings by two of her Saturday rivals, but she had an excuse for the first defeat, in the one-mile City of Roses Handicap on Dec. 26, when she was forced to take up to avoid a fallen horse on the first turn. Pete's Dolly, who in her prior outing had finished second to Quiz the Maid, went on to win the City of Roses by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:40.20. Earlier in the meet, Pete's Dolly led throughout to win a six-furlong allowance race by nearly four lengths. She will carry 120 pounds Saturday.

Quiz the Maid did not have an obvious excuse in her most recent outing Jan. 8, when she had to settle for second behind the front-running Chancy Chancy in a one-mile invitational handicap Jan. 8. Chancy Chancy, a double stakes winner here last season, regained her best form with a 1 1/4-length score after a mile in 1:41.20. Chancy Chancy gets in under 118 pounds.

Yougottabe the One, Amber Two, and She's All Fired Up complete the field of six.
