'Quiz' aims for fourth straight win

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Meadows fans will get a double dose of stakes action Sunday, when the track will run the $10,000 City of Roses Handicap for fillies and mares and the $20,000 Juvenile Mile.

Trainer Jim Fergason holds a strong hand in both races. He will send out 3-year-old Quiz the Maid in the one-mile City of Roses and has a pair of solid contenders in the Juvenile Mile.

Quiz the Maid will carry high weight of 123 pounds in the City of Roses, which has drawn a field of nine. She has won her last three races, each against older rivals: the six-furlong Diane Kem Handicap, the six-furlong Oregon HBPA Invitational Overnight Handicap, and the one-mile Oregon HBPA Invitational Overnight Handicap. The win streak has boosted her Portland Meadows record to 7 wins and 2 seconds from 9 starts.

In the Juvenile Mile, Fergason will be represented by Typhoon Aaron and Tomorrow's Turn. Typhoon Aaron, who is undefeated after two starts, edged Tomorrow's Turn by a head when they raced last in the Columbia River Handicap at six furlongs Nov. 27. That was Tomorrow's Turn's first start at the meeting, however, and he was shuffled back early in that race. In his previous outing, Tomorrow's Turn ran third to Seattles Best Joe in the six-furlong Captain Condo Handicap at Emerald Downs on Sept. 19.

Also running is Solid Gold Bar, who comes off a win over $12,500 foes at Golden Gate on Nov. 25.
