Quero Quero captures Honeymoon

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Paulo Lobo continues to score upsets with 3-year-old fillies.

Last year, Farda Amiga won the Kentucky Oaks at 20-1. Saturday at Hollywood Park, Lobo won the $215, 950 with Quero Quero, who was sent off at 10-1.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Quero Quero won by a neck over an unlucky Atlantic Ocean, who was stuck in traffic on the final turn, led briefly in the stretch but could not hold off the winner.

Sharpbill, the longest shot in field of 10 at 25-1, finished third, followed by Shapes and Shadows, Gotdream, Major Idea, Rutters Renegade, Bartok's Blithe, Star Vega and Lady's Mantle.

Quero Quero was never far from the front throughout the 1 1-8 miles on turf. Ridden by Tyler Baze, she raced off the rail throughout, stalking Shapes and Shadows, who set an early pace of 24.89 and 49.88 seconds. Fifth on the turn, Quero Quero rallied wide to pass Shapes and Shadows, Sharpbill and Atlantic Ocean in the final sixteenth.

Owned by Julio Camargo's Old Friends, Inc., Quero Quero ($22.60) was timed in 1:49.34.

Even though Quero Quero broke her maiden in her previous start on May 11, the Honeymoon was not her first appearance against winners. She finished third in the California Oaks Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on March 15.

A half-sister to champion sprinter Housebuster, Quero Quero is expected to return in the $750,000 American Oaks over 1 1-4 miles on turf on July 5.
