Quarter Horse stakes schedule announced

The Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Futurity, a restricted Grade 1 event worth an estimated $1 million, highlights an expanded stakes schedule for the 2014 fall Quarter Horse racing season at Evangeline Downs, which begins Oct. 1.

Total purses for the 2014 stakes schedule are approximately $1.5 million, an increase of more than 7 percent from last year. There are 13 black-type events, up from seven last year.

“We are excited about the upcoming meet and hope our bulked-up stakes program is well received by the horsemen,” said Chris Warren, director of racing operations for Evangeline and its sister property, Delta Downs. “We have strengthened both our Louisiana-bred program along with offering more opportunities for open-bred horses this year. Our closing night, Dec. 20, should be a tremendous evening of racing with a total of five stakes races, including the Evangeline Futurity and Derby.”
