Pyro starts outside in Indiana Derby

To win Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby, Pyro will have to defeat an unbeaten rival and another who is 7 for 8 lifetime. A field of 12 was entered for the Indiana Derby on Wednesday, with Pyro, the expected favorite, on the far outside.

Power Game, trained by Shug McGaughey, has yet to be tested in three tries, and Tin Cup Chalice earned a $250,000 bonus for sweeping the Big Apple Triple series against New York-breds.

Power Game has won his three starts by a combined 16 1/4 lengths. His most recent win came by four lengths Sept. 7 at Monmouth in the $59,000 Restoration Stakes.

Tin Cup Chalice was 7 for 7 going into the Step Nicely on Sept. 14 at Belmont, but lost by a neck against open company. Before that he had won four races this year, all against New York-bred company.

Pyro, last years Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up, has won the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, the Grade 3 Risen Star, and the Grade 3 Northern Dancer this year. He is coming out of a third-place finish in the Travers Stakes for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Others in the 1 1/16-mile Derby are Cubfanbudman, He's Eze, Budge Man, Famous Patriot, Chris Got Even, Chow Wagon, I.M. Boomer, Acai, and Asmodeus.
