Put an asterisk beside new Hoosier record

ANDERSON, Ind. - Records are made to . . . have an asterisk put beside them.

Sunday, leading rider Terry Thompson equalled a Hoosier Park record by winning six Thoroughbred races on a card. It was the third time this year he tied the record shared by Jon Court and Mike Morgan. Thompson then won for the seventh time on the 12-race card card in a Quarter Horse allowance.

Thompson registered wins aboard Boldest Challenge ($8.20) in the second and Warp Speed Scottie ($13.60) in the third to start out his record-breaking night. He then scored four straight in races 5-8 aboard Bull Ticker ($7.20); Cherie's Shadow ($6.40); Babas Valentine ($5), and Jubilees Galore ($3.80).

When a mount came open in the 12th, Thompson picked up his first career Quarter Horse ride aboard 3-5 favorite Dash Del Ray, who sped to a 1 3/4-length victory, giving him the track record seventh win - with an asterisk attached.

Thompson owns a commanding 94-48 edge over Jamie Theriot in the rider standings with two weeks remaining in the meet.

* Hava Cool Breeze, trained by Brent Taylor, captured Sunday's $15,000 Bradford Stakes under Carter Riley, but the duo didn't collect the biggest check. Casa de Royalty, owned by Don and Brenda Evans finished second to earn a $3,000 share of the purse plus a $7,500 award as winner of the Mid-America Quarter Horse Racing Challenge. The Bradford was the final leg of the seven-race series hosted by different tracks throughout the Midwest.

* Leading trainer Stanley Roberts also put his name in the record books Sunday. He saddled Indiana-bred maiden Catchthatdream ($6.80) to victory in the first race for his 40th win of the season, breaking the record of 39 held by last year's champion, Ray Stifano. Roberts long ago wrapped up this year's training title and owns a 40-17 edge over Stifano.

* Apprentice rider Anthony Esposito posted his first career victory on Monday night when his mount, maiden Cooks Lane, gutted out a neck victory for a $27 upset in the fifth race.
