Purse resplit at Los Al after positive test

The purse of the $182,600 El Primero Del Ano Derby for Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos on April 11 was ordered redistributed earlier this month after race winner Fighter on Fire tested in excess of the permitted level of clenbuterol, according to a statement released by the racing board.

Trainer Adan Farias has been fined $5,000 and suspended for 30 days - from Saturday through Sept. 14 - for the infraction.

Fighter on Fire won the 400-yard race by 2 1/4 lengths for owner Rancho El Alarcan. The El Primero Del Ano Derby is considered an important early-season 3-year-old race in California.

The winner's share of the purse was redistributed among the remaining eight finishers. Dreaming Sweet, who made his stakes debut in the El Primero Del Ano Derby, is the promoted winner, and received the first-place purse of $76,692.

Clenbuterol is a bronchial dilator used to aid horses with breathing problems. It is permitted to appear in postrace tests only at minute levels.
