Pure Prize continues to win with second crop

Aqueduct

Pure Prize, a son of Storm Cat out of champion Heavenly Prize, got six stakes winners in his first crop (including Birdbirdistheword, Western Prize, and Nice Inheritance). His second crop, now 3-year-olds, includes the unbeaten filly Pure Clan, who won last year's Pocahontas Stakes.

On Feb. 7, Be Bullish became Pure Prize's latest stakes winner when he won the Appealing Gift Stakes at six furlongs. Be Bullish is out of the Smarten mare Smart Holly, making him a half-brother to stakes winner Tom's Thunder.

* On Feb. 8, the 3-year-old filly Sabael showed the high speed of her sire, Hook and Ladder, and won a $35,000 maiden claiming race going wire-to-wire at 27-1. Hook and Ladder got off to a fast start last year, as his precocious babies won often sprinting. On Feb. 16, Big Truck, Hook and Ladder's best runner to date, ran a game second in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay.

* Dixie Union is getting attention these days. He is the sire of the 4-year-old Grasshopper, who won the Mineshaft Handicap (and who finished a close second to Street Sense in last year's Travers Stakes), and the sire of Grasshopper's 3-year-old full brother Turf War, was one of the favorites for the Southwest Stakes. On Feb. 8, Duke of De Buqe, a 3-year-old gelding by Dixie Union, won a 1 1/16-mile allowance for Todd Pletcher, wiring his field by 5 1/2 lengths. Duke of de Buqe is out of the Devil's Bag mare Miss Livi, and is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Balto Star.

* While his slow-maturing offspring often need a distance of ground or turf to strut their stuff, Arch had a front-running winner in a six-furlong maiden race on Feb. 9. Duffy's Tavern, out of the Well Decorated mare Buzz Buzz Buzz, won by a length. His second dam is a full sister to Buzz My Bell, dam of 1996 Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone.

Bay Meadows

P.S.U. Grad is one of many stakes winners from Harlan's Holiday's first crop, and the 3-year-old filly won a one-mile optional-claiming allowance for Craig Dollase on Feb. 9. P.S.U. Grad, who won the Barretts Debutante Stakes last year, is out of the Native Prospector mare Lo Cal Bread, a half-sister to stakes winner Richter Scale and Outperformance. Her second dam, Devine Pet, is a half-sister to Ubetshedid, the dam of Best Pal.

* Put It Back, the sire of top sprinter Smokey Stover, is also the sire of High Resolve, winner of the Joe O'Farrell Juvenile Fillies Stakes and Arizona Juvenile Fillies Stakes last year at 2. On Feb. 9, High Resolve won her 3-year-old debut, capturing the Princess Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths as the heavy 1-2 favorite. High Resolve is out of the On to Glory mare Shari's Glory and is an example of female family inbreeding as she is inbred 5x5 to Grey Flight, through her stakes-winning son and champion sire What a Pleasure and her champion daughter Misty Morn, herself a Broodmare of the Year who produced five stakes winner and two champions.

Fair Grounds

The late Hennessy continues to get winners, especially on grass. The hidden turf stallion is the sire of Heather's Angel, a 3-year-old filly who won a maiden race on grass at the about 5 1/2 furlongs on Feb. 4. Heather's Angel is out of the stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Taghkanic, a half-sister to stakes winners Private Emblem and Rhum. Hennessy's offspring are best at from five furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on all surfaces, and his best runner was juvenile champion Johannesburg.

* Dallas Stewart has a nice 3-year-old filly in Cloudburst, who won the Mardi Gras Stakes on Feb. 5 at about 5 1/2 furlongs on grass. Cloudburst is by Storm Cat and out of the Vice Regent mare Harbor Springs, making her a half-sister to 2-year-old champion Boston Harbor. Harbor Springs is also a half-sister to sprint star Groovy.

* On Feb. 8, the 4-year-old colt Sonoma Cat won a one-mile maiden race for Steve Asmussen. By Storm Cat and out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare She's a Winner, Sonoma Cat is a full brother to stakes winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Bluegrass Cat.

Gulfstream

Doctor Cal won a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on grass Feb. 4. The 3-year-old colt is by the versatile stallion Distorted Humor, whose runners are equally adept on dirt and turf. Doctor Cal is out of the Rahy mare Fancy Clancy, a half-sister to stakes winner Joyeux Danseur and to Danseur Fabuleux, the dam of champion Arazi (also by Rahy).

* Distorted Humor had another winner, this time on dirt, when his 3-year-old colt Understatement won his debut in a six-furlong maiden race by three lengths on Feb. 7. Understatement is out of the Capote mare Emotional Outburst and is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Roar Emotion.

Finishing second was first-time starter Keep Laughing, another 3-year-old colt by Distorted Humor who is out of the multiple-stakes-winning Personal Flag mare It's Personal. Keep Laughing is a full brother to It's No Joke, winner of the Hawthorne Gold Cup, Ack Ack Handicap, and Bet on Sunshine Stakes.

* On Feb. 9, Callie's Joy, a 4-year-old filly by Distorted Humor, won a one-mile allowance by eight lengths as the 5-2 third choice. Callie's Joy is out of St. Jovite mare Callie's Clown and descends from the brilliant family that produced Will's Way, Citidancer, Willa on the Move, Lady Reiko, and Acceptable.

Oaklawn

Stone Bird won a one-mile optional claimer on Feb. 9. The 3-year-old colt by Grindstone is out of the Kris S. mare Bird Cage, a half-sister to Birdstone (by Grindstone) and Kentucky Oaks and Acorn Stakes winner Bird Town (Cape Town).

Santa Anita

Decorator, a 3-year-old half-sister to stakes winners No Matter What and E Dubai, won a maiden race on turf at about 6 1/2 furlongs for Richard Mandella on Feb. 9. By Storm Cat, Decorator is out of the multiple-stakes-winning Lord at War mare Words of War.

* On Feb. 9, Distorted Humor got yet another winner when Stop the Humor, a 4-year-old filly out of the Stop the Music mare Stop the Croquet, won a maiden race on turf at about 6 1/2 furlongs.

* Ingrid the Gambler won the Wishing Well Handicap at about 6 1/2 furlongs on Feb. 10. By Johannesburg, Ingrid the Gambler is out of the Forest Wildcat mare Pretty Livia and gets turf breeding from her sire and damsire.
