Puck gets a break and wins

MIAMI - Puck took advantage of a speed conducive racetrack and the misfortune of expected pacesetter Kingmaker to lead throughout and win Saturday's $100,000 Unbridled Stakes at Calder by a length over The Judge Sez Who.

Jockey Cornelio Velasquez sent Puck right to the lead after Kingmaker stumbled and lost jockey Manuel Aguilar immediately after the break of the 1 1/16-mile Unbridled. Puck set a comfortable pace and fended off challenges through the final furlong from both Rocker and The Judge Sez Who to record his first stakes victory.

The Judge Sez Who rallied three wide into the stretch and outgamed Rocker for second. Rocker, who upset Puck in their previous meeting, drew even with Puck in early stretch but could not get past him.

Puck was the second choice in the wagering behind Kingmaker when he left the starting gate but closed as the solid favorite. He paid $5.40 after covering the distance in 1:44.84 over a wet track that yielded 10 wire-to-wire winners on the 12-race card.

Puck is trained by Bill White and owned by Classic Contenders.

Neither Kingmaker nor Aguilar were injured as a result of the incident leaving the gate.
