Prospect Park to miss Derby with high white blood cell count

Shigeki Kikkawa
Prospect Park wins an optional claimer at Santa Anita on Jan. 30.

Prospect Park, who finished a dull fourth in the Santa Anita Derby last Saturday, is off the Kentucky Derby trail after being found to have a high white blood cell count, trainer Cliff Sise Jr. said on Thursday.

Sise on Sunday had said he was concerned about Prospect Park’s demeanor in the hours leading up to the race on Saturday, noting that he was unusually quiet. A check of the colt’s temperature that afternoon was normal, so he ran, but subsequent diagnostic work revealed the elevated white cell count.

Prospect Park had finished second to Dortmund, the Santa Anita Derby winner, in their previous starts, the San Felipe Stakes on March 7.

Prospect Park had earned 30 qualifying points toward a berth in the Kentucky Derby.

I can't wait mike welsch's clocker report!! Based on the workouts you can determine a horses fitness and physiological status for the upcoming derby !!!!!

Yooooo Cliff, if you were concerned about his demeanor you should have 'SCRATCHED'. him from running. Even Mr. Ed's trainer knows that. Jersey Skip

Wow! Perhaps you should be training since your whatever knowledge seems better than Cliff's. When do you begin training?

Fair assessment. Better to be safe than sorry. Hard to pull the trigger on a scratch with derby fever. Matts not off base though.

I'm sure the stewards would love that excuse for scratching. Ya, we need to scratch our horse is quiet. He is sound and has no temperature but we want to scratch out of a million dollar race that we're 4/1 in. Clueless

Your comment is spot on. Horse should have been scratched. Trainer admits the horse was not acting right and a temperature alone is not proof a horse is doing well. These are not machines, they can be sick just like us without having a temperature.

The Derby is a Stampede, some of the good horses will show up at Preakness & Belmont
April Smith More than 1 year ago
Exactly! It's a cattle call. The Preakness is about finesse and the Belmont is about endurance.

Horse had no shot to hit the board in the derby

Nice horse. Sorry to hear...but, good news Sise backing off. Hopefully, he'll relax, get healthy and we'll see him this summer.

10 points will get you in.They start dropping like flies like every year
tommy More than 1 year ago
Thus drop like flies because trainers don't know how to train them!!
mike More than 1 year ago
Randy, exactly! We see this each year.

He wasn't getting in anyway. He was the low earner among the 30 point horses and not all from that group are getting in.

Notice how nobody is screaming Sise Jr ruined another one? Blame it on Pletcher anyway. You know you want to.
Mark D More than 1 year ago
That's because he is NOT running in the Derby...while many trainers would have ran anyways.

you missed the mark by a mile. If you trade Sise Jr for Pletcher and Pletcher withdraws Prospect Park like Sise Jr did there would be a whole different reaction for the exact same event. Example Sise Jr withdraws Prospect Park him from the KD trail. Thats great....a true horseman. Pletcher withdraws Prospect Park him from the KD trail. Pletcher ruins another one...ban him. Too many angry people out there who just hate Pletcher and have totally reactions for the exact same event based upon their own issues. People need to stop drinking the Pletcher Haterade
Anonymous More than 1 year ago
totally "DIFFERENT" reactions sorry about that

Pletcher ruins horses.
Steve Gibson More than 1 year ago
The significant difference is Pletcher in fact does ruin many a horse and it's not like he's working with marginal horses with all sorts of conformation issues. he's typically working with the best bred and conformed animals out there yet he still manages to work his way through them at an alarming rate. Most of his horses are toast by the time they are 3. Yeah, he has a few nice older horses but it is shocking how many beautifully bred horses seem to break down under his Lukas type production line operation. It has nothing to do with jealousy either, it ihas to do with the fact he literally runs many of his horses into the ground as 2 and 3 year olds. the best bred horses that $$$$ can buy. You can choose to pretend it's all about jealousy. You know you want to! :-)

And another one bites the derby dust. Too bad. I hope PP just gets well and that his connections bring him back sound and healthy.
Randy Baker More than 1 year ago
Seems like a rush job. hopefully around for connections later. This might benefit him like it did Shared Belief.

Too bad, now another speed bump will get in. At least with this one we knew he'd be out of the way early.
