Private Terms euthanized at 25


LEXINGTON, Ky. - Private Terms, a Grade 1 winner and sire of millionaires Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites, was euthanized last week at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., the nursery said Friday.

The Private Account horse was 25 and had been pensioned at Claiborne since 2006.

Claiborne manager Bradley Purcell said Private Terms was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age.

Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Janney bred Private Terms from Laughter, a sister to the great Ruffian who also produced Grade 3 winners Blue Ensign and Light Spirits and stakes winners Dover Ridge and Steel Maiden He won the 1988 Wood Memorial and Gotham Stakes, defeating Seeking the Gold both times. Private Terms was unplaced in Winning Colors's Kentucky Derby that year but went on at 4 to take three of four starts, including the Grade 2 Massachusetts Handicap. He wrapped up his racing career with a five-length score in the Damascus Handicap at Laurel, leaving the track with wins in 12 of 17 starts, including nine stakes victories. He earned $1,243,947.

From 17 crops of racing age, Private Terms has sired the earners of $27,772,631.
