Prince Flori wins Preis von Baden

Prince Flori made mincemeat of the form book at Baden-Baden on Sunday, when he crushed all of the fancied players in the Group 1, $967,000 Grosser Preis von Baden.

Ridden by Filip Minarik, Prince Flori won the Grosser Preis von Baden by three lengths at odds of 26.40-1. Oriental Tiger and Saddex, third and fourth in the German Derby, were second and third on Sunday. German Derby winner Schiaparelli was fifth, and Donaldson, winner of the Deutschland-Preis, finished last of nine, 40 lengths behind the winner. The time for the 1 1/2 miles on good ground was 2:33.87.

A son of two-time Grosser Preis von Baden winner Lando, Prince Flori made just his fifth start Sunday. Following a winning debut at Frankfurt in April, he won a 1 1/4-mile Group 3 German Derby prep at the same track a month later, but was ninth in the derby itself, 10 1/4 lengths behind Schiaparelli.

The Grosser Preis von Baden was weakened by the withdrawal last Monday of Breeders' Cup Turf winner Shirocco, who will instead face off with his Andre Fabre-trained stablemate Hurricane Run in next Sunday's Prix Foy at Longchamp, a prep for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
