Pride beats Hurricane Run

Pride handed European champion Hurricane Run only the second defeat of his nine-race career when she caught him almost on the line in Sunday's Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

It was the first Group 1 win for Pride, who also has four Group 2 wins, including the Prix Corrida over 1 5/16 miles on this course May 29.

Pride, ridden by Christophe Lemaire, raced in fifth position most of the way in the six-horse field. Hurricane Run had been racing in third under Kieren Fallon, but took the lead more than a quarter-mile from home. He repelled the challenge of Policy Maker, but Fallon had Hurricane Run under strong pressure in the closing stages, and Pride nailed him by a head.

A 6-year-old daughter of Peintre Celebre, Pride finished in 2:35.90 on ground that was officially rated good to soft. She is owned by her breeders, NP Bloodstock, the stable name of Sven Hanson, and is trained by Alain de Royer Dupre. Pride will now be rested for an autumn campaign and point to the Hong Kong Cup, in which she was beaten a neck by Vengeance of Rain last December.
