OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Rudy Rodriguez started his march to 2,000 wins in the second race on New York Claiming Championships Saturday, the closing card of the Aqueduct winter meet. My Won Love won a spirited stretch battle with 2-5 favorite Picture Day to give Rodriguez his 1,001st career training victory less than 24 hours after he scored his milestone 1,000th win in the Aqueduct finale Friday. My Won Love increased Rodriguez’s lead in the Aqueduct trainer standings to three wins over Linda Rice, the trainer of Picture Day. Rodriguez came back to win race 5 with Control Group, clinching his 10th New York training title, nine of which have come at Aqueduct. Rodriguez was all smiles in the Aqueduct paddock before race 2 as well-wisher after well-wisher came up to shake his hand and congratulate him on his accomplishment the day before. Manny Franco was aboard My Won Love in the $55,000 Videogenic, a $12,500 starter allowance for fillies and mares at six furlongs. The win was Franco’s 60th at the Aqueduct winter meet, which began Jan. 1. A 23-year-old native of Puerto Rico, Franco already had the winter meet riding title wrapped up. It is the first title of his career. “I want to say thanks to all the trainers and owners for giving me the opportunities,” Franco said. “My first title, you know it means a lot. I am looking forward to a good Belmont meet and Saratoga. My agent has been doing a great job with me.” Franco is represented by Angel Cordero Jr. My Won Love pulled away in the final sixteenth to best Picture Day by 1 1/2 lengths. The 7-year-old paid $7.40 as the second betting choice in the five-horse field and is now 7 for 43. Rodriguez’s second win came with Control Group in the $90,000 Mr. Sinatra, a 1 1/8-mile race for older horses who have started for $40,000 or less since Jan. 1, 2017. Control Group went wire to wire despite quick setting fractions and scored by a length over a late-running Mills. Control Group, who was ridden by Kendrick Carmouche, paid $2.90. He had won the Alex M. Robb for New York-breds in his prior start. “I’m not too sure, but I think maybe we might wheel him back in the Excelsior,” Rodriguez said. The Grade 3, $150,000 Excelsior will be run at 1 1/8 miles next Saturday. Control Group is owned by Michael Dubb and David Simon. Dubb is the leading owner at the Aqueduct meet. Franco came back to win race 4, the $75,000 Stud Muffin, a one-mile starter for horses who have raced for $25,000 claiming or less in 2017-18. Franco moved JS Bach up outside Polar Jet and Dylan Davis, who will finish second in the Aqueduct standings, nearing the stretch. Polar Jet floated J S Bach wide into the stretch and then the two horses came together and bumped in upper stretch. J S Bach prevailed by a neck for trainer Jason Servis. He paid $5.20. In the opener, Christmas Sky led throughout to win the $80,000 Karakorum Elektra by 1 1/2 lengths for trainer Robertino Diodoro and jockey Angel Arroyo. The Karakorum Elektra was for fillies and mares who had raced for $32,000 or less in 2017-18. In race 2, the $70,000 Xtra Heat, Short Kakes was reluctant to load in the gate, but then stalked the pace and took the lead in upper stretch en route to a 2 1/4-length victory. Trained by David Cannizzo, he paid $4.50. The win was Jose Lezcano’s first since he returned to New York from Florida on Friday. Rodriguez, Franco, Dubb top standings Rudy Rodriguez, Manny Franco, and Michael Dubb topped thie respective divisions at the Aqueduct winter meet, which ran from Jan. 1 through Saturday. Rodriguez sent out 38 winners at the meet, five more than runner-up Linda Rice. He won three races Saturday. Franco rode 61 winners at the meet, including two on Saturday. Dylan Davis finished second with 47 wins. Dubb won 14 races at the meet, including two Saturday.
