OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Randi Persaud was the star of the New York Claiming Championships at Aqueduct on Saturday, upsetting the final two races of the afternoon with longshots Chilly Bon Bon and Holding Aces. Chilly Bon Bon blew up the tote board in the $60,000 More to Tell, paying $136, and Holding Aces completed the late daily double with a $43.40 mutuel in the $55,000 Kelly Kip. The $2 Persaud daily double returned $913. Persaud said he did not bet the double. “No,” Persaud said. “I’m not a big gambler. I don’t want to jinx it.” Persaud’s stable is on a hot streak. He won the first and third races at Aqueduct last Sunday with Bunyaan, who paid $31 in a $14,000 claiming race with a five-horse field, and Desert Affair, who paid $19 in a $25,000 claimer, which had six horses. Persaud, a 44-year-old native of Guyana, has been training since 2008, when he took over the stable of his father, Atreo. He rode 99 winners as a jockey between 1994 and 2006. In 2017, Persaud won 15 races from 260 starters. He is 5 for 48 this year. “Last year we were a little slow,” he said. “Now we are picking up. We have some better horses, new claims. These wins mean a lot for everyone in the barn. We are hard-working. Everyone works together.” For the record, Persaud said he liked both of his Saturday winners going into their respective races. “I was shooting for these two races,” Persaud said. “I loved these two horses.” In race 9, Chilly Bon Bon took advantage of a quick early pace to run down Karma Delight in deep stretch and win the More to Tell by a head. Unbridled Daddy cut out fractions of 23.17, 45.77, and 1:10.35 in the mile race for $16,000 starter horses while being closely tracked by Karma Delight, Borsa Vento, Marriage Fever, and Pegasus Red. Karma Delight took over in upper stretch but the early fractions caught up to him and he could not hold off Chilly Bon Bon and jockey Abel Lezcano. The final time was 1:36.67. Persaud claimed Chilly Bob Bon for $10,000 in February. The 5-year-old had finished third for $25,000 and fifth for $20,000 in his two starts since the claim. In the Kelly Kip, Holding Aces attended the pace of the six-furlong race for $12,500 starter horses three wide under jockey Trevor Simpson. He took over in upper stretch and went on to win by 4 1/4 lengths. Persaud claimed Holding Aces out of a third-place finish in a $10,000 claimer March 16. Both Chilly Bon Bon and Holding Aces are now 4 for 21. ** In the $80,000 Caixa Eletronica, Helooksthepart lived up to his name, storming home in fine style to score a $34.60 upset. Helooksthepart, who had been claimed in three of his prior four starts, races for trainer Antonio Arriaga and is owned by The Players Group and Mary Beth Reis. He was dismissed at 16-1 in the Caixa Eletronica, but came flying in the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length. Eye Luv Lulu set the pace while saving ground, and clicked off a lively pace of 23.04 and 45.36. The 7-year-old held well for second but could not contain the winner’s late run. Harlan Punch, the 4-5 favorite, had a rough trip in the seven-furlong race for horses who have started for $40,000 or less in 2017-18 and had to settle for fourth, behind Field of Courage. Harlan Punch bumped with Rockford on the backstretch and then with Field of Courage on the far turn. Helooksthepart paid $34.60 and completed the course in 1:22.91. Arriaga claimed him for $32,000 in January and just missed winning for $50,000 by a nose in the 8-year-old’s start prior to the Caixa Eletronica. The type of horse the Claiming Championships are based upon, Helooksthepart is now 12 for 47. ** In race 6, the $70,000 Peeping Tom, Morning Buzz scored a dominant victory for trainer Edward Barker and owner Danny Chen. Big Guy Ian and Schivarelli set a fast pace of 21.75 and 44.85 in the six-furlong sprint for $20,000 starter horses, and Morning Buzz blew by them in midstretch to score by 3 3/4 lengths under Junior Alvarado. He was timed in 1:09.77. Barker claimed Morning Buzz for $25,000 two starts back. Morning Buzz paid $6.50. ** In race 8, the $60,000 Sis City, Frostie Anne went wire to wire to give Rudy Rodriguez his third win of the day and Junior Alvarado his second. Frostie Anne, who paid $5.20, won by a length and was timed for a mile in 1:37.15. Cotton Candy Cutie, also trained by Rodriguez, chased the winner from second throughout, and held the place over Maddizaskar, who was getting to her late.
