Gray Dude paid $44.20 when he won the $40,000 Jack Flats Stakes on Oct. 1 at Gulfstream Park. He will be a significantly shorter price Wednesday when he runs in a $50,000 conditional claiming race at Gulfstream Park West. The one-mile race on turf for 3-year-olds and up anchors the last leg of the Rainbow 6, which has a $100,250 carryover. Gray Dude is a sharp horse right now, but he drew the outside post in the 11-horse field, so it would be hard to single him in the Rainbow 6. Flemish Cap and Vencedor will draw into run if the race is moved to the main track. Trained by Armando De la cerda, Gray Dude is going for the hat trick, and he overcame adversity in his latest start going a mile on turf in the Jack Flats. With Jose Batista aboard that day, he got bumped at the start and dropped back to last in the $35,000 starter race for 3-year-olds. He didn’t give up though, and he was finishing with a flourish from along the rail when he was forced to steady in midstretch. However, he gathered himself quickly and managed to edge Diddley by a neck. Diddley set the pace and caused Gray Dude to steady when he drifted in late. In Gray Dude’s previous start, also going a mile on turf, he came from a stalking position to edge Dream Shot in a $25,000 conditional claiming race for 3-year-olds and up. He should have an honest pace to work with, and if Batista can work out a trip, he could get up in time.
