OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though she’s been facing cheaper company lately, Lamontagne’s effectiveness sprinting on turf may give her an edge in Thursday’s second-level allowance/optional $62,500 claiming feature scheduled for six furlongs over Aqueduct’s outer turf course. A field of eight was entered for the race, six for the turf, and two for the main track. The forecast calls for dry conditions and temperatures in the low 50s on Thursday. Lamontagne will be making her first start off the claim for Danny Gargan, who is restructuring his stable after breaking up with Midwest Thoroughbreds. In her last start, Lamontagne rallied from 11 lengths back to just get beat a nose going a mile. Prior to that, she finished second and third, respectively, in a pair of six-furlong races at the $25,000 and $40,000 claiming level. Gargan believes a repeat of those two performances makes her a player in this spot. :: Get Cyber Monday discounts on PPs, digital subscriptions, and more! “If she flashes back to any of her previous races [at six furlongs], she’ll be tough,” Gargan said. “With the turf season ending, I wanted to take a shot before we go to Florida.” Lamontagne is a two-time winner at six furlongs on turf, whereas the remainder of the field has just one combined win at that distance. It’s hard to leave anything Jason Servis sends out off your tickets. Servis, who is 5 for 16 at this meet and who won two stakes last week, sends out Truth in the Lies in this spot. Truth in the Lies was beaten a half-length in this same condition going 1 1/16 miles Nov. 9 by Not Taken, who was just beaten a nose in the Forever Together Stakes last week. Truth in the Lies has never sprinted on turf, and Servis said “I’m just throwing the football up in the air and hoping somebody catches it.” Carolina Shag ships up from Maryland for trainer Susan Cooney. Carolina Shag was fourth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths, in this same condition here Nov. 3. Fire Key, second in that race, won Sunday’s $125,000 Autumn Days Stakes. :: Sign up now for Thursday's Cigar Mile webinar, beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Carolina Shag will get blinkers for the first time Thursday. Jc’s Shooting Star has made 32 starts, but never at six furlongs. She has only three wins, but has finished in the money 16 additional times. Trainer David Donk said seven furlongs is more ideal for Jc’s Shooting Star, but he was just looking to get her one more start before turf season ends. True Charm is the other member of this field to have won going six furlongs on turf. She accomplished that against New York-breds in October 2016 at Belmont in gate-to-wire fashion. Annie Rocks makes her first start on turf since June when she finished fourth behind Wekeela in an allowance/optional $80,000 claimer going 1 1/8 miles.
