ELMONT, N.Y. – Big Handsome’s 4-year-old debut was ugly. Sunday, Big Handsome will look to bounce back from an eighth-place finish in the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland last month when he heads a likely field of five in a third-level allowance race scheduled for six furlongs over Belmont Park’s inner turf course. Big Handsome hasn’t won since taking last year’s Paradise Creek Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths here. He lost his next four starts, and was beaten a neck in two of them, both stakes. In the Shakertown, run over a soft Keeneland turf course, Big Handsome was never a factor, finishing eighth of 12, beaten 12 1/2 lengths. “I hope it was the soft going because he just showed very little,” said Tony Dutrow, the trainer and part-owner of Big Handsome. “I thought he went into the race very good, he came out of the race very good.” In five starts over Belmont’s turf course, Big Handsome has two wins, two seconds, and a third. “He’s back on a surface he’s been very successful on and shown a liking for,” Dutrow said. “I feel very good of his chances of running well this time.” There is a forecast for rain on Sunday, but it’s not believed to be enough to force the race off the turf. Big Handsome would run only on turf, Dutrow said. Dutrow said that a good performance Sunday could give Big Handsome a chance to run in the Jaipur on June 9. Sandy’z Slew is coming off a front-running victory in a second-level allowance at Aqueduct in April. Red Rifle is cutting back to a sprint after having raced primarily in long-distance turf races before being claimed and put on the dirt last fall by David Jacobson. Ready for Rye has won on both turf and dirt but has proven most effective over wet tracks. Weekend Hideaway was entered as a main-track-only entrant. “It’s my job to look after a horse that’s looked after us over 40 races and a million dollars,” said trainer Phil Serpe, who entered Weekend Hideaway back in Monday’s Commentator Stakes.
