Pretoria Light pulls upset

EmailPretoria Light may be no match for Cher Ami on the main track, but it was a different story when the two 3-year-old fillies met on grass in the $50,000 Sunny Issues Stakes.

Pretoria Light turned the tables on her nemesis in the one-mile Sunny Issues, chasing and then overtaking Cher Ami near midstretch en route to a one-length victory over the 8-5 favorite, Snow Cone. Cher Ami gradually weakened once relinquishing the lead, checking in another half-length farther back in third.

The victory was the second this year for Pretoria Light, a homebred daughter of Colony Light owned by JoD Farms and trained by David Brownlee. Pretoria Light had finished second behind Cher Ami in the Lady Sonata and Runaway Marcie stakes this fall.

Pretoria Light ran the distance in 1:35.41 over a firm course under Roberto Alvarado Jr. and paid $46.40.

* Amazing Speed did some table-turning of her own on Saturday, reversing a recent loss to Running Lass in the Connie Ann Stakes with a convincing five-length victory in the $50,000 Sonic Gray Stakes.

Amazing Speed ($8.80) got the drop on Running Lass to control the pace of the 1 1/16-mile Sonic Gray before drawing away through the stretch. Cat Can Do rallied to finish second, a half-length in front of Running Lass.

Saffronista, the 5-2 favorite in the field of seven fillies and mares, finished fourth.
