Presque Isle filly gets more than 300 stitches after accident

Undefeated 2-year-old filly Baby Princess was injured in a freak accident Tuesday at Presque Isle Downs and required more than 300 stitches to close her wound, according to her trainer, Joe Martin.

Baby Princess was pulling up after winning the third race, an allowance sprint, when she spooked under jockey Pablo Morales. Baby Princess ran into and fell on top of the outer rail, resulting in a nearly foot long gash that started between her front legs.

“It was about the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” said Martin, the leading trainer here. “She left a blood trail back to the barn and was in shock for a while.”

Baby Princess will be sidelined until next season, Martin said. The filly is owned by K.K. and Devi Jayaraman, both doctors, who campaigned champion Summer Bird.

“Doc had big hopes for this filly,” said Martin. “We hoped to go to the [$100,000 Presque Isle Debutante] next month, but she’ll be out for about five months now.”
