Presque Isle Downs: Cat’s Holiday to stalk pace in Malvern Rose Stakes

Cat’s Holiday will face statebred company for only the second time in her short career when heading a field of six 3-year-old Pennsylvania-bred fillies in the $75,000 Malvern Rose Stakes at Presque Isle Downs on Sunday.

Unraced at 2, Cat’s Holiday won at first asking for trainer Graham Motion on Jan. 12 at Tampa Bay Downs. Her second win came locally against statebred company May 20 in an allowance race going a mile.

Motion then took Cat’s Holiday to Monmouth Park, where she finished third in the Revidere Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on turf but was disqualified and placed fourth because of stretch interference. In her most recent outing, the daughter of Harlan’s Holiday finished an even fifth in the Grade 3 Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs on July 13 going 1 1/8 miles on a turf course rated “good.”

In her two victories, Cat’s Holiday has come from just off the pace, and that style should suit her well in a field with an abundance of speed to her inside. Mario Pino, aboard for her local victory, will ride once again.

One of the speed horses to her inside in the 1 1/16-mile Malvern Rose is Emerald Bracelet, who drew post No. 3. Emerald Bracelet has won two consecutive races and three out of her last four.

After winning her maiden May 8, the Rod Madrigal trainee finished third when facing older statebred horses for the first time. In her next start June 22, she defeated older statebred fillies and mares by 10 3/4 lengths. Most recently, Emerald Bracelet won an open allowance race against older horses by four lengths. All three of her wins have come in front-running fashion, and all of her races have been at Penn National, so she has yet to run on a synthetic surface.

Rounding out the field are Heated Exchange, Platinum Steel, Interrupt, and Devilish Love.
