A friend and I were watching Orb before he was saddled and we both could swear he had an injury of the front right shoulder. Maybe not, but it sure looked like it. And my friend is a horsewoman of long standing. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

The only thing that was hurt was his pride after the race

If people really watch how the race unfolded it's obvious that Orb was intentionally put in a no win situation by the D.Lucas horses. As soon as the gate opened Orb was blocked from getting outside by Will Take Charge (Lucas horse) and as soon as Orb tried to get in front of Titletown Five (Lucas horse)....Titletown cut him off and kept him smothered on the rail. These 2 Lucas horses sacrificed themselves for Lucas's other horse...Oxbow! After watching the Derby..Lucas knew Oxbow was going to be on the pace and all he had to do was box up Orb with his other 2 horses. I don't think a trainer should be allowed to have 1/3 of the horses in such a small field of a Stakes race! Lucas didn't want to give Orb a chance to get clear because Orb would have ran down Oxbow in a heartbeat! Oxbow is a good horse..but he wouldn't have won this race if it was run on the Up!

Sounds like someone who not only bet on Orb, but also knows nothing about racing. Oxbow has always run on the front so that's no surprise to anyone. If you think WTC keep Orb boxed in from the 7 post then that in itself shows you know nothing about racing. Everything about the Preakness in regards to how the track always plays, post, and pace were against Orb. He should have hit the board at least but no way he was odds on to win. He didn't even run a faster Derby time than Mine that Bird both on a sloppy track and MTB was 6-8 clear so you know he was eased after making the lead, Orb was all out to win by 2.5. Orb should probably win the Belmont because it sets up better for him and he is bred for the distance, but don't be surprised if Oxbow wires them again and WTC flies late for 2nd or third as these are the best bred for the Classic distances.

If you take a look at the move Titletown Five (who finished last) made, you could make a case it was only to keep Orb from getting inside the winner.

the track had nothign to do with it, the entire day it was closers down the middle which would have set up perfect for orbs stretch running style. I wouldnt have been suprised if titletown was to get in orbs way as much as possible but thats horse racing. Ox was still good enough to keep everyone at bay so hats off to him.

Agreed. It's understandable when a trainer enters two horses, but three or more is pushing it, especially in such a small field, which is the main reason I never liked greedy, old Lukas.

Thats what makes a good rider adapt to conditions. Its all feel and do it.

I was watching the NBC telecast and a reporter interviewing Gary Stevens asks "How are you going to ride Oxbow? His response if memory serves me correct is something along the lines of stalking, laying off the speed, but no way are we intent on making the lead. Unbelievable!
Patrick More than 1 year ago
Uh...did you see the fractions? Stevens had no choice but to take the lead as a result of the fractions being so slow. Another masterful ride by Stevens who rode our family's horses when he was riding at Longacres back in the days....Congrats Gary!

Great response. If Gary did not take the lead, who would've? Lucky you that you knew Gary in the days before the glory!

And Titletown didn't go? Lucus's other horse decides to sit and Stevens goes on Oxbow? Don't you think that was the plan all along?
