'Prayer' the pick in Bam's

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Excessive Prayer, who won her maiden race in the Courtship Stakes, heads a contentious band of 10 2-year-old fillies entered in the $60,000-added Bam's Penny Stakes. The six-furlong sprint goes as the ninth race on Saturday's 10-race program.

Excessive Prayer finished second in the first two starts of her career. She was second in a maiden race at Sacramento in August after taking up sharply on the turn. She came back in another maiden race at Bay Meadows in September and again finished second.

In her last out, the six-furlong Courtship Stakes, Excessive Prayer attended the pace to the stretch and then moved willingly under Bobby Gonzalez for a two-length victory. Gonzalez has made a remarkable return after injuring his foot in a spill here and has the call again on Saturday.

There are three invaders from Southern California who should provide strong opposition for Excessive Prayer. Cinnful Bride showed good speed and wound up third in her last race, the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita. Trained by Caesar Dominguez, Cinnful Bride won her maiden impressively in her previous start in September at Santa Anita.

Briteonzmyday was a game winner in allowance company last out, at Santa Anita. Trained by Wesley Ward, Briteonzmyday has already visited the winner's circle four times in only seven starts and has earned more than $144,000.

The third Southern California invader is Icantgoforthat, who was a handy winner in her last appearance on Oct. 11 at Santa Anita against $50,000 claimers. The Bob Baffert-trained speedster has two wins in her four starts and should insure a rapid early pace.

Winter Meeting is unbeaten in two starts. She won her second start here in allowance company and her debut at Del Mar when she dusted $40,000 maiden claimers by five lengths.

Among the top local contenders in Saturday's feature are Bigboystoy and You're on Your Own. Bigboystoy enters Saturday's stakes undefeated in two races. She broke slowly in her debut but rallied strongly to defeat a group of $8,000 maiden claimers. She stepped up into starter allowance company in her next start on Oct. 10 and posted an impressive 3 1/2-length victory.

You're on Your Own finished a game second in her last start here in allowance company. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, she was claimed from her debut at Hollywood Park for $40,000.

There will be a special early of 12:15 p.m. post on Saturday, Cal Cup Day, and a Cal Cup sweatshirt giveaway.
