'Prancer' goes long in Lilac

Email

CALGARY, Alberta - Fancy Prancer, runaway winner of the six-furlong Mount Royal, will try to stretch her speed to a mile in the Lilac at Stampede Park on Saturday.

Fancy Prancer faces six rivals in the $40,000 handicap for 3-year-old fillies and is the highweight at 119 pounds. She drew the outside post but remains the one to catch. Rider Quincy Welch undoubtedly will send her away from the gate in search of the lead in the short run to the first turn.

Brass to Diamonds, Sly Lady, and Sweet Monarch, the two-three-four finishers in the Mount Royal, return to challenge Fancy Prancer, and a case could be made for each of them to rebound in this race.

Brass to Diamonds closed well with a three-wide move and should appreciate the extra distance in Saturday's feature. She was voted champion of her division last year and breaks from post 3 under regular rider Jaime Santos.

Sly Lady, favored in the Mount Royal after winning the prep, faltered in the lane. Her defeat spoiled her undefeated record. She returned with a bullet move of 59.60 on May 24, and adds Lasix for the first time in the Lilac.

Sly Lady drew the rail and will be ridden by Real Simard.

The spoiler could be Sweet Monarch, who was stopped making her move last out and has the look of a filly looking for more ground.

A long-striding daughter of Wavering Monarch, Sweet Monarch was impressive winning a conditioned allowance on April 19 and is worth a look at a price in this spot.

Sister Patsy Ellen and Isawthelight come into the Lilac off front-running wins but have yet to face the kind of speed Fancy Prancer brings to this race.
