Prairie: 'Panorama' formidable

Email

ALTOONA, Iowa - Panorama Valley looks to run her unbeaten streak to four when she heads a field of eight 2-year-old fillies in the $40,000 Prairie Meadows Debutante.

Panorama Valley, an Ohio-bred daughter of Peaks and Valleys, was the buzz of the track here following a 10 1/4-length gate-to-wire debut score over males in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race on May 11.

She returned to the races seven weeks later against stakes company and was just as impressive, scoring another gate-to-wire victory, this time by 11 lengths in the Prairie Gold Lassie while clocking five furlongs in a rapid 57.05 seconds.

Panorama Valley's owner, Helen Andrews, reportedly turned down several six-figure offers for the filly following her first two wins.

Things were tougher for Panorama Valley in her most recent start as she dueled throughout in the 5 1/2 furlong Silver Maiden Stakes at Arlington Park and had to dig in late to score a neck victory. Trainer Anne Mitchell will once again give the mount to jockey Kelly Murray. Panorama Valley must carry 120 pounds high weight under the allowance conditions of the Debutante.

Galactic Cat ships in from Arlington for trainer Rebecca Maker and is the main threat.

Galactic Cat was a 2 1/2-length winner over maiden special weight company on July 31. Maker has worked Galactic Cat four times since her win at Arlington, including a bullet five-eighths mile drill in 1:00.60 Aug. 24. James Lopez picks up the mount.
