Email

ALTOONA, Iowa -- Perennial leading owner Maggi Moss, on the verge of her 10th consecutive title at Prairie Meadows with a resounding 42 wins, swept a pair of Iowa Classic night stakes when reformed sprinter Hes Not You took the $86,683 Iowa Breeders' Derby and veteran Cresco Direct Hit proved best in the $77,575 Iowa Classic Sprint.

Ridden by Israel Ocampo, Hes Not You ($7.20) dug deep in the final sixteenth to resist the persistent challenge of fellow Chris Richard trainee Freeze Your Kela by a neck. Earning $52,009, Hes Not You covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.23 while tallying in his stakes debut and garnering his fourth victory of the meet.

The favored Cresco Direct Hit ($3.80), also trained by Richard, who is a meet-leading 70 for 218, won a speed duel with third-place Stormin River and found plenty when asked by Terry Thompson to hold 24-1 longshot Runaway Walkaway safe by 1 1/2 lengths. Collecting $46,545 in the process, Cresco Direct Hit got the six furlongs in 1:09.85 while winning his second Iowa-bred stakes of the season after scoring in the May 12 $70,000 John Wayne Stakes.

* Longshot maiden Contessa's Moment ($74.40) wore down her opposition to take the $87,266 Iowa Sorority Stakes for juvenile fillies. Well-positioned throughout under jockey Ken Tohill, the Lloyd DeBruycker-owned homebred Contessa’s Moment edged clear late by 2 1/2 lengths from Lady Kee while running six furlongs in 1:12.24. Conditioned by Ray Tracy, Contessa's Moment made $52,359 with her first victory in three career starts.

* The Tim Martin-trained Cagey Rascal ($7.40) proved best of the 2-year-old colts and geldings when registering a gritty one-length win in the $85,575 Iowa Cradle Stakes over pacesetting 25-1 longshot Wolf Pack Jack. Also ridden by Tohill, Cagey Rascal earned $51,345 for breeder-owners James and Phyllis Fox while covering six furlongs in a solid 1:11.14.

* Determined filly Jokes N Jazz ($15.80) fought gamely to win the $83,941 Iowa Breeders' Oaks by a head from the rallying 20-1 longshot Gray Edge. Jokes N Jazz, trained by Chris Hartman for breeder-owners Robson Thoroughbreds, collected $50,364 after responding to Terry Thompson's all-out drive and going one mile and 70 yards in 1:42.90.

* Jockey Thompson, recently recovered from a broken leg sustained in a May starting gate mishap here, nursed the talented Someplace Else ($4.80) to a 1 1/2 length win in the $93,925 Donna Reed Stakes for older fillies and mares. Trained by Kelly Von Hemel, the Prairie Lane Farms bred and owned Someplace Else got the one mile and 70 yards in 1:42.11 and earned $56,355.

* Trainer Don Von Hemel, Kelly's father, won the featured $96,475 Ralph Hayes Stakes when Wings of War ($6.40) wore down the Moss-owned Ice Hockey by 3/4 lengths. Ridden by Shane Laviolette for breeder-owner Beverly J. Lewis, Wings of War, winning for the fifth time in 2012, stayed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.60 while earning $57,885.
