Prairie Meadows: Sur Sandpit rallies

Email

Sur Sandpit rallied from well off the pace to take the lead in the final 50 yards and held on for a neck victory over Rubianos Image in a four-horse blanket finish in the $81,600 Ralph Hayes for older colts and geldings at Prairie Meadows.

Sur Sandpit sat ninth in the 11-horse Hayes field through a contested half-mile run in 46.89 seconds. Under jockey Luis Ranilla, Sur Sandpit launched his rally racing five wide on the final turn and stopped the clock in 1:44.27 for the 1 1/16 miles. Rubianos Image trailed to the final turn and had traffic trouble in upper stretch before rallying strongly to narrowly miss. Two-time Hayes winner Take Me Up finished another half-length back in third.

Trainer Suzie Evans claimed Sur Sandpit for $15,000 on May 28. He has won 4 of his 6 starts since.

In the card's five other statebred stakes:

* Louis Leggs ($23.80) rallied to collar 3-5 favorite Thekatcamehome in the final 70 yards and score a one-length victory in the $75,800 Iowa Sorority Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

* Timetobook ($13.20) took command entering the stretch and held off the late charge of 6-5 favorite Casper Who to record a one-length victory in the $74,700 Iowa Cradle for 2-year-old colts and geldings.

* Queansco ($5) overcame a wide trip and drew off for a 3 1/4-length victory over Camela Carson in the $79,630 Iowa Breeders' Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.

* Count Rock ($71.40) scored a game front-running upset by a length over King Freddie in the $73,900 Iowa Breeders' Derby for 3-year-old colts and geldings.

* Gamblers Passion ($7) inched clear of even-money favorite Switch Lanes to score a one-length victory over that rival in the $79,200 Donna Reed for older fillies and mares.
