Prairie Meadows: 'Sue' faces elders

Miss Macy Sue goes for her first stakes victory when she faces five older rivals in the $40,000 Iowa State Fair Stakes at six furlongs at Prairie Meadows.

A 3-year-old filly, Miss Macy Sue enters the State Fair off a pair of runner-up efforts behind graded stakes winner Hot Storm. On June 30, Miss Macy Sue chased Hot Storm throughout and finished 1 1/2 lengths back in the $100,000 Saylorville here. Most recently, Miss Macy Sue shipped to Mountaineer Park and set the pace to midstretch before dropping a 2 1/2-length decision to Hot Storm in the $85,000 West Virginia Secretary of State at six furlongs Aug. 6. Kelly Von Hemel trains Miss Macy Sue, who is 3-2-1 from 8 starts.

Miss Macy Sue faces significantly easier rivals Saturday and could lead all the way under Terry Thompson, who has a return call in the State Fair.

Silver Fortune may have the best chance at an upset. She cuts back to a sprint and figures to be rallying strongly through the stretch under jockey Alex Birzer. Ray Tracy Jr. trains Silver Fortune, a 5-year-old mare who has 7 wins in 29 starts. Her earnings of $148,650 top the State Fair field.
