Prairie Meadows rider hurt

Email

ALTOONA, Iowa - Jockey Glen Murphy sustained three broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a broken collarbone in Monday's second race at Prairie Meadows when his mount U S West ducked in and jumped the temporary rail as the horses left the six-furlong chute.

Murphy was tossed feet first to the ground when U S West jumped the rail, and the horse's hind legs appeared to land on Murphy. Murphy, who had picked up the mount on U S West because scheduled rider Joe Johnson was out of town due to a death in the family, was tied for second in the Prairie Meadows jockey standings entering Monday's card.
