Prairie Meadows: Praire Cougar provides Tracy with 500th local win

Email

ALTOONA, Iowa -- Praire Cougar resisted the persistent challenge of stable companion Sacred Romance to win the $67,641 Bob Bryant Stakes, a six-furlong event for Iowa-bred 3 year old fillies Saturday night at Prairie Meadows.

Giving her trainer Ray Tracy his 500th victory at Prairie Meadows, Praire Cougar proved best of Tracy's trio in the six-horse field when edging clear late for a three-length tally.

Tracy's top pair dueled through a half-mile on 44.82 seconds  but the closers still made no impression late as Dazzling Pioneer nosed out Here Comes Polly for third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Sacred Romance.

Tracy, based in nearby Bondurant, is off to a stellar start to the 2012 season as the Bob Bryant win marked his 20th win in just the first 18 days of racing.

Sent off the lukewarm favorite in the evenly-matched group, Praire Cougar ($5.80), under jockey Alex Birzer, earned $40,585 and covered the distance in 1:11.02.

Freeze Your Kela wore down 4-5 favorite Voodooville to win the $68,633 Gray's Lake Stakes, Saturday night's co-featured six-furlong sprint for Iowa-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings.

Given a target by pacesetting 38-1 longshot I'm Honour Grad, Freeze Your Kela and Voodooville charged home in the last 70 yards fighting out a strong finish. Freeze Your Kela ($6.60) prevailed by a neck for trainer Chris Richard, who pulled even with Tracy's 20 wins here this season. I'm Honour Grad held on gamely for a clear third in the field of seven.

Ridden by Terry Thompson, Freeze Your Kela's score enabled him to pull within two of Alex Birzer's meet leading 36 wins.

Freeze Your Kela, a homebred for Iowa's perennial leading breeders River Ridge Ranch, earned $41,179 in a time of 1:10.44.
