Prairie Meadows: Kate's Main Man, Wings of War hard to separate in Cyclones

Email

The veteran geldings Kate’s Main Man and Wings of War are expected to vie for favoritism in the $75,000 Cyclones Handicap at Prairie Meadows on Saturday night. The pair could find themselves in a battle for early control in the 1 1/16-mile race for Iowa-breds.

Kate’s Main Man, one of the best and toughest Iowa-breds in recent years, has not won since taking a one-mile allowance race locally last July 5. Kate’s Main Man proved he is still capable at age 7 when he put together a pair of good open allowance placings in March at Oaklawn Park. Kate’s Main Man’s sharp half-mile drill in 47.40 seconds last Sunday indicates he should give his best from the outside post in the field of six.

Wings of War drew the rail and looks set to rebound after a subpar effort when fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the six-furlong John Wayne Stakes on May 12. Trained this season by Don Von Hemel, Wings of War enjoyed an excellent Oaklawn meet, highlighted by a gutsy nose victory on Feb. 3 in an optional claiming race going a mile over a muddy track.

If one of the top pair sets too fast of a pace or they hook each other in a prolonged duel, a quartet of Iowa-bred geldings will be ready to pick up the pieces.

Heading that list is the Lynn Chleborad-trained Cainam, who ran a career best when cruising home a 5 1/4-length winner in the 2011 Cyclones Handicap last June 11. Chleborad, who is enjoying a stellar 19-for-84 season locally which includes three wins last Sunday, had Cainam ready for the John Wayne when he rattled home from eighth to run second behind Cresco Direct Hit.

The improved Runaway Walkaway, former sprinter Launch Light, and the consistent closer West Albany round out the competitive Cyclones field.

Prairie Meadows has a special 5 p.m. Central first post on Saturday due to the Belmont Stakes simulcast. The Cyclones Handicap is scheduled to be run at 8:57 p.m.
