Prairie Meadows cancels 4 races

The last four Thoroughbred races were canceled on Friday night at Prairie Meadows after the jockeys complained that the racing surface was uneven near the quarter pole.

The riders said a hole began to develop near the quarter pole on Thursday evening after an afternoon thunderstorm dumped nearly two inches of rain on Altoona, Iowa, where Prairie Meadows is located.

On Friday, races 3 through 6 were canceled. Races 7 through 10 on the card were for Quarter Horses and were held at their regularly scheduled post times. The cancellation of the Thoroughbred races resulted in a two-hour gap between live races.
