Prairie Meadows: Beware the Devil romps in Iowa Stallion Futurity
Email
ALTOONA, Iowa - Beware the Devil turned Friday evening's $107,036 Iowa Stallion Futurity into a procession, pulling away from a stretched-out group of nine 2-year-old rivals to score by 10 1/4 lengths.
Beware the Devil surged clear leaving the turn under Alex Birzer. He returned $9.40 and covered the 5 1/2 furlong distance in 1:05.02. Trained by Lynn Chleborad, he earned $69,429 for owner-breeder Donald Shrage.
Beware the Devil was one of eight Iowa-breds in the field, which consisted of all maidens, including six horses who had never raced. A son of Devil His Due, Beware the Devil had finished a willing second after a tardy start in his June 25 debut behind the impressive Voodooville.
A Little Edgy, who had finished fourth in the same five furlong Iowa-bred maiden event as the winner, rallied from fifth to snatch second by three-quarters of a length from the 9-10 favorite Kid Mescalero, an Oklahoma-bred who shipped in from Lone Star Park for trainer Bret Calhoun.
Best Bets
Daylon Miracle is perfect in four career starts. She even won in her career debut despite getting impeded and making a break. The 3-year-old filly has good speed off the gate and should be able to take charge in the City of London Fillies and Mares final. Seeing as she will be 3-5 or so, let’s key her in the exacta over #1 Cynthia Loo and #4 Amber Kadabra.
