Prairie Meadows: American Sugar works hard to get job done in Goldfinch

Even-money favorite American Sugar rallied to grind out a head victory over a determined Livin Peace in Saturday's featured $60,000 Goldfinch Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Prairie Meadows.

Well-positioned by jockey Alex Birzer in behind embattled pacesetters Livin Peace and Cruzette, American Sugar ($4) found a seam three-wide into the stretch and commenced her rally. Livin Peace, under Terry Thompson, had fended off Cruzette leaving the turn, which set the stage for a spirited duel between the top pair through the final furlong. Wilhelmina stayed on to claim third in the six-horse field, 5 1/2 lengths behind American Sugar.

Trained by Lynn Chleborad for owner Poindexter Thoroughbreds LLC, American Sugar, a Harlan's Holiday filly, collected $36,000 while registering her fourth career stakes win. She covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:10.39.
