Prairie: Cmego sticks head in front

ALTOONA, Iowa - Cmego ($66) survived a race-long duel with fellow longshot Royalty of Iowa to prevail by a head in the $82,200 Ralph Hayes Stakes at Prairie Meadows.

The 1 1/16-mile Hayes was the feature on an Iowa Classic Night card that consisted of 10 stakes races for Iowa-breds.

Cmego and the 19-1 shot Royalty of Iowa combined for an $807 exacta.

Take Me Up, seeking to win the Hayes for the third straight year, finished fifth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths.

In the other stakes for Thoroughbreds:

* Queansco ($5) rallied for a 2 1/4-length victory in the $79,630 Iowa Sorority for 2-year-old fillies.

* Mingo Mohawk ($7) rallied through traffic and survived a bumping incident in midstretch to score a 1 3/4-length win in the $75,130 Iowa Cradle for 2-year-old colts and geldings.

* This One for Abbey ($13.80) took advantage of a hot early pace and rallied to score a two-length win in the $76,300 Iowa Breeders' Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.

* Roar of Victory ($12.20) wore down pacesetting favorite Wild Wild West in the stretch to win the $77,530 Iowa Breeders' Derby by 1 1/4 lengths.

* Switch Lanes ($13.40) scored a three-quarter-length win in the $78,600 Donna Reed for fillies and mares as two-time defending champion Sharky's Review finished last in the six-horse field.
