Prado wins five to hit 4,999

Jockey Edgar Prado won five races on Thursday's nine-race Gulfstream Park card - a meet high for a single card - giving him 4,999 victories for his career. With one more win, Prado, 36, will become the 19th jockey to win 5,000 races.

It was the eighth multiple-win day for Prado at Gulfstream since Feb. 19. Prado is the second-leading rider at the meet with 58 victories, trailing only John Velazquez, who has 73 wins.

Prado rode all nine races on Thursday. He won the opener aboard Prospect Kid ($6.40), the third on Richwood Rebel ($4.80), the sixth on Potomac Chase ($5.40), and then swept the late double on Balser d'Amour ($11.20) and Desirable Moment ($11.20).

Prado was listed to ride five horses on Friday's card, including two for trainer Bob Klesaris. He won three races for Klesaris on Monday and another for him on Thursday. If Prado fails to do it Friday, he will have 10 opportunities Saturday, including his ride on Tapit in the Florida Derby.

Prado, a native of Peru, racked up the majority of his wins in Maryland, where he was the leading rider five times between 1991 and 1997.
