Powder best in Spring Fever

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Powder led from start to finish to win the $50,000 Spring Fever Stakes at Oaklawn Park by two lengths over 3-10 favorite Spanish Glitter. It was a head back in third to Southern Tour.

Powder($9.20) broke like a shot in the 5.50 furlong race for fillies and mares, and proceeded to set fractions of 21.51 seconds for the opening quarter, 45.12 for the half, and 57.42 for five furlongs while clear of her rivals. Never threatened in the stretch, she went on to cover the distance in a blazing 1:03.74 under regular rider Tim Doocy.

"I told Tim this morning that this race would be all over in a minute, so we would have to get on with it in a hurry," said Jesse "Sonny" Wigginton, who trains Powder for Virginia Kraft Payson.

The Spring Fever marked Powder's stakes debut, and with the win she remained perfect at Oaklawn, having won all three of her local races this meet. Overall, she has won four of eight starts, and with the $30,000 she earned in the Spring Fever, improved her bankroll to $119,735.

Spanish Glitter chased the pace throughout. "I think we just got outrun by a sharp filly today," said jockey James Lopez.
