Post 12 okay for Curlin

Email

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - You would think racing jurisdictions would at some point stop trying to enliven post-position draws. Every horse race has one, after all, and there are only so many ways to show that horse X will break from stall Z. But leave it to the Emirates Racing Club to continue pushing the envelope.

In a highly choreographed ceremony Wednesday night at the Johara Ballroom in the lavish Madinat Jumeirah Hotel, Emirates Racing showed that 86 horses were entered in the $21 million worth of Thoroughbred stakes on Saturday's Dubai World Cup card.

When it was all over, there was the name Curlin next to post position 12 on two large video screens hanging at the front of the ballroom. Curlin, one of 13 horses entered in the $6 million Dubai World Cup, drew wide for the 2,000-meter dirt race, but the post did not concern assistant trainer Scott Blasi.

"With him, I'd rather draw post 6 or out than 6 or in," Blasi said.

Curlin has a tendency to drift out when he runs. He broke from the inside in his Dubai prep race for the World Cup, and was slightly rank while trapped near the rail. Saturday night, jockey Robby Albarado can break and survey the horses ahead of and inside him.

"It suits us fine with the configuration of the racetrack," Blasi said. "He'll be able to put himself in good position."

Races at 2,000 meters - approximately 1 1/4 miles - start at a spot on the track with about a two-furlong run to the first turn. Several horses have won from a wide draw.

The field of 13 for the 13th World Cup equals the biggest in race history. The same number ran in 2000, when Dubai Millennium won, setting a course record of 1:59.50 in a year when the Nad Al Sheba dirt was at its liveliest. Many see Curlin's chance of breaking that record as a more interesting proposition than his chances of beating his 12 rivals: The English bookmaker William Hill is offering 6-4 odds on a track record. On Curlin, the antepost price is a paltry 2-5.

Jalil, considered by many the biggest threat to Curlin, landed post 8, and will be ridden by Frankie Dettori. A. P. Arrow, the improved American horse, drew post 10, with fellow Americans Well Armed in post 2 and Great Hunter in post 5. Premium Tap, second in the 2007 race, has post 6, while Asiatic Boy drew stall 9.

Three races had been drawn and post positions assigned Monday, their fields made public Wednesday. Two others, the Sheema Classic and the Duty Free, were drawn by means of a computerized, random post position assignment system. And finally, large placards hidden behind doors in gilded frames were revealed by Emirates Airline flight attendants. When a name on a placard was called, a representative for the horse pointed at a crystal globe, which was turned 180 degrees, showing the post position.

Fields of 16 were entered in the $5 million Sheema Classic and in the $5 million Duty Free. Two of the Sheema Classic favorites, Viva Pataca (post 12) and Doctor Dino (post 15), drew poorly. Better Talk Now landed post 6, and the other American in the race, Spring House, got the 11.

The high-class Godolphin duo of Creachadoir (post 9) and Literato (post 10) break from adjacent gates in the Duty Free.

There are 11 horses, including three from Godolphin and two from trainer Mike de Kock, in the UAE Derby, with 15-horse fields entered in the Golden Shaheen and the Godolphin Mile. Idiot Proof landed a potentially difficult post 14 in the Golden Shaheen, with Benny the Bull in post 10, and Diabolical in the 5 slot.

The U.S. horse Barcola had no luck at the draw, and will break from post 15 in the Godolphin Mile. Diamond Stripes did better, and breaks from post 8.
