Poshsky notches a $44 upset victory in the Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Poshsky, the longest shot in a six-horse field of California-breds, posted a $44 upset in the $100,345 Crystal Water Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The veteran gelding lagged at the back of the field in the one-mile turf race, was still last at the quarter pole, and then stormed home on the outside to nail even-money favorite Alert by a neck. Ashleyluvssugar, returning from a nine-month layoff, finished three-quarters of a length back in third.

Fernando Perez rode the winner for trainer Peter Miller, whose instructions to Perez were the winning strategy. “Peter said there [are] a couple speed horses, but just try to relax, don’t fight him too much,” Perez said.

Poshsky, a 6-year-old by Vronsky, relaxed in last and was up late to win for the seventh time in 29 starts. Owned by Gary Barber, Leonard Friedman, and Adam Wachtel, Poshsky has earned $412,890.

The final time was 1:35.77.
