Portland rider may lose license

The Portland Meadows stewards have suspended veteran rider Karen Knapp for 365 days, the maximum allowable by law, and referred her case to the Oregon Racing Commission with the recommendation that her license privileges be permanently revoked.

Knapp, who tested positive for prohibited drugs on four previous occasions dating back to 1986, was faulted for repeatedly providing urine samples of insufficient quantity for testing.

In their ruling, the stewards suggested that Knapp, who was required to supply random urine samples as a condition of her license, was attempting to supply urine that was not her own.

Knapp has 10 days to appeal the stewards' ruling, which was issued Jan. 2, to the ORC.

* Portland Meadows canceled Monday's scheduled nine-race card due to severe cold weather and an impending storm that was expected to dump 3 to 10 inches of snow in the area. Director of racing Jerry Kohls said the track remained frozen despite night-long efforts by the maintenance crew and could not be opened for training on Monday morning.
